Radiculopathy, commonly known as a pinched nerve, occurs when one or more nerves are compressed or irritated at the root, where it exits the spinal column. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness that radiates along the path of the affected nerve.

Common causes include:

  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Bone spurs
  • Arthritis
  • Trauma

Symptoms vary depending on the location of the affected nerve.

Cervical spine (neck): pain or loss of function radiating into the arm, shoulder, and hand; numbness or tingling in fingers

Thoracic spine (trunk): Pain around the chest or rib area

Lumbar spine (low back): Pain or loss of function radiating into the leg and foot (sciatica); weakness in the leg or foot.

Manual Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to managing radiculopathy, focusing on the musculoskeletal system and its relationship to overall health.

Manual Osteopathic Treatment Modalities

  • Manual Therapy: Techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, and manipulation aim to improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate nerve compression.
  • Myofascial Release: Addressing restrictions in the fascia (connective tissue) can help reduce pressure on nerves and improve circulation.
  • Cranial Osteopathy: Gentle techniques applied to the head can influence the nervous system and promote overall balance.
  • Visceral Manipulation: Addressing the mobility and function of internal organs can indirectly affect the spine and nerves
  • Manual Lymphatic Draining: encouraging fluid movement throughout the body to ensure appropriate healing and inflammatory response and clean-up may occur

Benefits of Manual Osteopathy:

  • Pain reduction
  • Improved mobility
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Enhanced nerve function
  • Holistic approach addressing underlying issue

What to expect during a Manual Osteopathy session:

  1. Initial Assessment: A thorough review of medical history and physical examination to identify the root cause of the radiculopathy.
  2. Treatment Plan: Development of a personalized treatment plan based on the assessment findings.
  3. Hands-on Treatment: Application of various manual techniques to address musculoskeletal imbalances.
  4. Advice and Exercises: Guidance on posture, ergonomics, and exercises to support healing and prevent recurrence

If you experience any of the mentioned symptoms, reach out to your local Manual Osteopath and start your pain-free journey today, your body will thank you!
