In my own experience as an expecting mother was as normal as you could expect; morning sickness without vomiting for a month, low back pain, difficulty breathing due to compression in my abdomen and I COULD NOT lay on my back as it sent me into a complete visceral overload in my third trimester. Recently, I had a returning postnatal client with a similar experience in her second pregnancy, but with additional pain in her low back/SI joint and hip area at her 35 week mark and progressively getting worse. These symptoms had left her with the need to stop working weeks earlier than she planned and limited her ability to connect with her 2.5 year old. After a single Manual Osteopathic treatment (in many variously adapted positions to accommodate her comfort), she has been able to return to life as normal, engaging more with her son, upholding the homemaker role and continuing to work part time.
Some expecting mothers unfortunately, combat additional issues such as meconium-stained amniotic fluid, preterm delivery and the use of forceps during delivery or the alternative to have a cesarean. Research has shown that with utilizing Manual Osteopathic Therapy, a mother can also reduce their chances of experiencing these challenging conditions at the time of delivery or leading up to simply by receiving Osteopathic Therapy during pregnancy. Prenatal and postnatal therapy in my practice has shown to be a MUST for creating the most comfortable pregnancy, as well to bring the body back to its proper alignment post delivery. There is a lot of physical demand and trauma endured in the pregnancy and delivery process, and you Mothers deserve to feel your best to prepare you for what’s to come with your Littles.
